Tessellated Floors:  Colour Range

Vitrified Porcelain - Made in Italy

Vitrified porcelain is obtained from a mix of white clays coloured with pigments. Vitrified porcelain is fired at very high temperatures and therefore is dense with very low water absorption levels. Other properties include good slip resistance (R10 slip rating), frost resistance, chemical resistance and excellent resistance to breakage and abrasion.

Our range of vitrified porcelain is made in Italy and has been sealed in the factory prior to firing as part of the manufacturing process. No further sealing is required after installation. Tile thickness - 7mm.

Vitrified Clay - Made in Italy

The unglazed vitrified clay tile (Red) is made from natural red clay. Being a natural clay product it is fired at a lower temperature than porcelain to retain its natural red clay colour. Vitrified clay is dense with low water absorption levels. It offers good slip resistance (R10 slip rating), frost resistance, chemical resistance and excellent resistance to breakage and abrasion.

Our range of vitrified clay is made in Italy. We recommend it is pre-sealed before laying, and a penetrating sealer applied after installation. Tile thickness - 8mm.

The red vitrified clay is slightly thicker than the vitrified porcelain colour range. This difference can be accommodated by the tiler during the laying process. Component pieces for use in tessellated patterns and borders are always supplied as cut pieces.

Areas of Use

Tessellated tiles can be used in all internal and external residential and commercial applications. Due to the nature of tessellated patterns they offer good slip resistance and can be used in wet areas.

Laying Requirements

It is important to employ a tiler experienced in tessellated tiling as it involves time setting out the pattern correctly, understanding where to start and finish the repeat of the pattern, and how to turn borders correctly around corners.

Tessellated patterns and borders are supplied as loose pieces (not on sheets). This is done to ensure that the product, once laid, is authentic in appearance and aesthetically pleasing. Joint sizes between tile pieces can vary throughout a floor from 1mm to 3mm. This is to accommodate any size variation from tile to tile and allows the tiler to open and close up the joints to ensure patterns and borders work. Always allow for an infill tile to be placed on the outside edge of the border. After centring the main pattern and border the tiler cuts the infill tile to suit.

Tessellated tiles can be laid in a traditional bed of sand and cement or a non-slump glue with a 10mm notched trowel. Your tiler will advise you of which method will suit your project.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The Renditions unglazed range of tessellated floor tiles has the colour going all the way through the tile. They are extremely hard wearing and abrasion resistant.

To care for Vitrified Clay Red tiles we recommend Steps 1 to 5.

For Vitrified Porcelain tiles we recommend Steps 2, 3 & 5.

Speak to your retailer as to which products they recommend and follow the manufacturer’s application guidelines.

 Step 1   Pre-sealing

This step is recommended for red vitrified clay only.

Being a natural clay product the red tile used in the tessellated range is slightly more porous than the other vitrified porcelain colours. Prior to laying and exposing the red vitrified clay to water pre-seal the top surface of the tile to prevent watermarking. Pre-sealing also reduces efflorescence (salting which can result from the mix of water, sand and cement, may form on the surface as a white deposit). Once the tile is pre-sealed it can be laid like any other tile.

 Step 2   Acid wash

Three to five days after the tiles have been laid and grouted, wash with a phosphoric acid cleaner to remove excess cement, mortar and grout residue from the surface. We do not recommend using hydrochloric acid.

 Step 3   Neutralise

Rinse the floor thoroughly with water or a neutral cleaner to remove all acid.

Step 4   Penetrating sealer

You may choose to further protect the tiles by applying a penetrating sealer which offers good resistance to oil, staining and assists in general cleaning. This type of sealer provides a natural looking finish.

Step 5   Cleaning & Maintaining

To maintain your tiles, appropriate cleaning products are available to compliment the sealers.
